Apply for refunds by April 30

April 21, 2004

Shawnee residents who turned 62 on or before Jan. 1, 2003, and lived in the city from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of last year are eligible for a refund of their residential telephone bill.

The rebate accounts for money that senior citizens paid in 2003 as part of Shawnee's "Special Municipal Charge," which is included in monthly residential phone bills.

Shawnee began collecting a franchise tax on local telephone bills in 1994. The city started issuing refunds to seniors in 1995 for the 1994 year.

Eligible residents must complete a refund application at Shawnee City Hall, 11110 Johnson Drive. Along with the application, residents must provide proof of their age and a portion of each monthly phone bill that shows the charge, which usually is located on Page 3 of the statement. Senior citizens will be refunded for each statement.

The deadline to apply for the refund is April 30. Refunds usually take from four to six weeks to be returned to residents.

According to the city, more than 800 rebates were issued in 2003, averaging $12.74 per refund.

For more information concerning the program, contact city hall at (913) 631-2500.

Talking points

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
