Letter: The people spoke

April 21, 2004

To the Editor:

In four short paragraphs Tracy Thomas has connected Mickey Sandifer from local councilperson to the presidency of the United States.

If only Mickey and his band of good old boys had known how closely connected they have become to weapons of mass destruction they may have had second thoughts of going forward in their quest. At least George Bush responded to the threat of Saddam Hussein. Not like the previous administration that sat on its hands for eight years.

As for the Wyandotte influence: the Kansas Speedway, Cabela's, Nebraska Furniture Mart and the surrounding business built up the past few years is very successful. Was there no room in western Shawnee for any of these units? Wyandotte County has done great with its growth and foresight.

The support of the replacement of the east side pool is what the citizens desired. Also Saint Joseph parish invested millons of dollars in a new school in Shawnee. Thank you. The citizens of Shawnee will support the new safety center when it gets to the ballot. We will get the good old boys to support the issue. If not, they will be dunked in the new pool.

Knocking on 2,200 doors and getting only 563 votes is 26%. George Brett could not even get into the Hall of Fame with a .266 batting average. Let alone get elected to the Shawnee City Council. The people spoke. Go for it Mickey. Build the pool. Get the safety center on the ballot. Maybe even set your sights on Washington D.C.?

Talking points

How often do you go to the library?

“I almost never go there at all — only with my wife, Kim. She checks out, I’d say, at least three books a week. The kids go with her, and she teaches them how to find things.”
