Woman toning up for San Diego walk
If you see a not-so-young, less-than-athletic looking brunette hoofing her way around eastern Shawnee, smile and get out your checkbook. Laura Filla is training to do something she's never even thought of doing before. She's raising thousands of dollars for the American Stroke Association for the honor of walking 26.2 miles in San Diego this summer.
Filla will be representing the American Stroke Association in the San Diego Musical Marathon on June 6 with many other walkers and runners from Kansas City and all over the country. The San Diego marathon is an annual event that draws thousands of participants from around the world.
"I have a long way to go, both physically and financially," Filla said. "I have to raise $3,900 to participate in the marathon, but I'd like to raise much more. I'm not in very good shape so this is a really big commitment. But whatever discomfort I endure will be nothing compared to what stroke victims and their families have to deal with."
According to the American Stroke Association, someone in America has a stroke every 45 seconds.
"I was shocked to learn how many people have strokes," Filla said. "One day they are leading normal lives and the next they're in a nursing home or being cared for by spouses or parents."
Filla has promised to carry the names or pictures of stroke victims with her in the marathon. To contribute to her fund-raising or to ask her to carry someone's name or picture, contact Filla at (913) 268-8188 or lfilla@kc.rr.com.

Talking points
Do you know who you’re voting for in November?
“Chuck Baldwin; he’s the Constitutional Party candidate. It’s the only conservative choice on there, as far as I can tell.”
