Surprise in County vote

April 6, 2005

Countywide races for the Johnson County Water Board and Johnson County Community College Board of Trustees turned out to have a few small surprises.

For Position 4 on the water board, Bob Reese edged out former Shawnee Council member Tracy Thomas and two other opponents with 45 percent of the vote. James Vader took Position 3 with 61 percent of the vote, and an unopposed Dick Weisser remained in Position 5.

In the three JCCC Trustee positions, JCCC student Benjamin Hodge received the largest number of votes, followed by incumbents Virginia Krebs and Shirley Brown-VanArsdale, leaving incumbent T. Nelson Mann without a seat.

Talking points

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
