Dr. K. Maynard "Doc" Curts, 89, a Lenexa veterinarian, died Thursday, June 9, 2005, at the Lakeview Village Health Center, Lenexa. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Southridge Presbyterian Church, 5015 Buena Vista Dr., Roeland Park. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, where a Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lakeview Foundation Chapel Fund, 9100 Park, Lenexa, 66215.
Dr. Curts was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Kansas City, Mo., the eldest of four children of Lloyd M. and Ethel L. (Kephart) Curts. He graduated from Westport High School in 1932 and earned his D.V.M. in 1941 from Texas A&M University. He was an assistant instructor at Texas A&M from 1939 to 1941. He was assistant professor of veterinary anatomy there from 1941 to 1942 as well as at the University of Georgia from 1946 to 1947. Dr. Curts joined Curts-Foolse Laboratories Sept. 1947 as veterinary medical director, became secretary in 1954, vice-president in 1962 and president in 1972. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. Dr. Curts was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Assn., the Kansas Veterinary Medical Assn. and many other professional associations.
He was an active member of Southridge Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years and served as secretary following his retirement from 1977 to 1990 and sang in the choir since 1949. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, earning his 33rd degree in 1975, and the Abdallah Shrine.
Dr. Curts was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence, in 1990 and his second wife, Dorothy, in May 2005; two brothers and a sister. Survivors include his two sons, John Curts and his wife, Yvonne Ferris, Bethesda, Md.; Roger Curts, Olathe; five stepsons, Doug Wicks, Alan Wicks, Chuck Wicks, Tim Wicks and Clark Wicks, all of Iowa; six grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
