Expansions show growth of families
Perhaps a sign of a growing population of young families, the Shawnee Planning Commission Monday approved yet another new preschool and an expansion of an existing preschool.
The Commission first approved a site plan and special use permit for Canterbury Preparatory School. The preschool is planned as a 6,081-square-foot facility with four classrooms for up to 99 children in the 22900 block of Midland Drive in the Shawnee Crossings development.
The Commission then approved a special-use permit for Hope Lutheran Church, 6308 Quivira, to increase the number of children from 60 to 120.
The Canterbury school will be the second preschool in the Shawnee Crossings development. The Goddard School, an 8,000 square-foot facility, is planned just down the street and received site plan and special-use-permit approval March 7.
Another preschool expansion was approved in late March when the Commission approved a site plan for the new West Trinity Lutheran Church. The church's new location will allow the preschool to expand to 60 children.
In other business, the Commission Monday also approved a revised special use permit for Sweet Life at Rosehill, 5820 Rosehill Rd., to increase the number of units from 144 to 150 for elder care.

Talking points
Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?
Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
