The Shawnee Police Department is investigating circumstances surrounding the drowning of a 2-year-old boy Friday.

Shawnee Police Capt. Ron Copeland said the pool was in the backyard of the boy's home, where he lived with his mother, stepfather and siblings. Although the pool was fenced in, the boy had walked out on the back deck unnoticed and fell in the pool.

The boy, identified as Christian Williams, was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Copeland said police and the Johnson County Coroner's Office would investigate the death.
