Man is sought in sexual assault
April 19, 2006
Shawnee Police are looking for a man suspected of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old boy.
Capt. Ron Copeland said a mother had brought her children to play on the playground at Shawanoe Elementary School Sunday evening and noticed a man taking pictures of children at the playground.
At some point, close to 8 p.m., the mother lost track of her 5-year-old son. She quickly found him on the north side of the school, where he was standing near the man with his pants pulled down.
The man told the mother that the boy had to urinate and he was helping him, an explanation the mother accepted at first, Copeland said. The man then wandered off.
"It was later determined that a witness had seen him fondling the boy's genitals," Copeland said.
"Normally there's some kind of a link where it's an uncle or friend, but this being a stranger makes it kind of unusual," Copeland added.
The suspect is described as a black male, about 30 years old and 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, with very dark skin and a heavy accent. He was wearing jeans, a white, button-up shirt and a light blue ball cap. He had short hair and no facial hair.

Talking points
How often do you go to the library?
“I almost never go there at all — only with my wife, Kim. She checks out, I’d say, at least three books a week. The kids go with her, and she teaches them how to find things.”
