Obituary: Donald Ruhl
Donald Ruhl, 83, of Shawnee, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. A Memorial Service was held Tuesday at the Shawnee Presbyterian Church. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, 6700 Antioch, Overland Park, KS 66204.
Mr. Ruhl was born in Hiawatha to Franklin Pierce "Pete" Ruhl and the former Margaret Kelley on Oct. 30, 1922. He graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1940. After high school Mr. Ruhl worked on the family farm in Hiawatha until 1942, when he was drafted into the Army. He joined the Army Air Corps as an aircraft mechanic and served through World War II, with assignments in the Pacific Theater.
Upon his discharge, Mr. Ruhl returned home and enrolled at the University of Kansas, from which he graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Mr. Ruhl worked as an accountant for Capper Publications Inc. in Topeka until 1959; for the Vendo Corp. in Kansas City until 1982; and for Sprint Corp. in Overland Park until his retirement in 1988. He married Virginia Frost in 1950. Mr. Ruhl was a member of Shawnee Presbyterian Church and the University of Kansas Alumni Association, and was a loyal fan of the university's football and basketball teams.
Mr. Ruhl is survived by his wife; two daughters, Constance E. Ruhl and Catherine E. Ruhl of Bethesda, Md; a son, John K. Ruhl of Overland Park; a granddaughter, Sarah Ruhl; and a grandson, Benjamin Ruhl Blanchard.
