Sesquicentennial cookbook for sale
Want to learn the secret ingredient of "Granny's Apple Butter," or how to make the mysterious concoction of "Aunt Minnie's Pink Stuff?"
These recipes and many more are unveiled in the "Tried & True Recipes" cookbook commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Shawnee, now officially available. The cookbook contains family recipes submitted by those who live and work in Shawnee and was a project of the Shawnee Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee.
In the book, recipes can go from the fairly simple dips and drinks to the slightly more complicated Salmon Fillets with Cream Sauce, though submitter "B" Meyer Miller assures cooks "This is a quick and easy meal and will really make you look like a gourmet cook."
Each recipe includes the name of the person who submitted it, and recipes often include a little hint or note like Miller's.
Many of the names are well known in Shawnee, as well, whether in the recipe title, like the Hoelting Texas-Style Fajitas, or submitted by long-time families, like Betty Zarda's Pecan-Crusted Tilapia and Rose Dusselier's Zucchini Bread.
The books also include helpful charts and information, including how to set a table, a meat-roasting guide and even a napkin-folding instructional.
Cookbooks are $10 each and are available at Shawnee City Hall, 11110 Johnson Dr.; the Shawnee Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Dr.; the Governor's Meeting House, 10910 W. 60th St.; and the Shawnee Town Trading Post, 11501 W. 57th.

Talking points
Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?
Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
