  • Katrina's Kids Project: Art of the Storm, October through December. This traveling exhibition of artwork created by Hurricane Katrina's evacuee children during their stay in Houston's Astrodome and Reliant Center shelters. Basic weather safety information also in provided.
  • Funky Mama, 9:30 a.m. today and Nov. 15 and 29. Come enjoy her special songs and singing games. Cost $1 per child.
  • Gymboree at Wonderscope, 9:30 a.m. Friday and Nov. 17. Bubbles, parachute play and songs for parent and child. Cost $2 per child.
  • Yoga For Kids, 3:45-4:30 p.m. Mondays. Enroll for four-week sessions of yoga, art and fun for children 4- to 9-years-old. A new session begins each month and costs $28 per child.

  • Priscilla Howe, Storyteller Extraordinaire, 9:30 a.m. Nov. 14. Priscilla joins the museum the second and fourth Tuesday of each month to tell her favorite stories with the help of her hand puppets. Cost $1 per child.
  • Wonderscope will be closed Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving.
  • Happy Grandparents' Weekend, all day Nov. 24-26. Special activities and performances are planned and grandparents get in free with their grandchildren's admission or memberships. They can also get a $10 discount on memberships. A Theatre for Young America workshop will begin at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 24, and Kids Park activities run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 25.

Shawnee Town

  • The Shawnee Town Museum is now closed to public tours. Tours will open to the public 10 a.m. -- 4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday in March.
  • Christmas Around Town, 4-7 p.m. Dec. 2. In addition to several activities in the downtown area at Johnson Drive and Nieman, Shawnee Town will have carolers, storytelling and a chance to visit Santa Claus at Town Hall.

Museum of History

  • The 1950s All-Electric House, open 1-4 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. Step inside this 1954 "house of the future," a completely restored KCP&L show home. It will be all decked out Nov. 25-Dec. 31 for a Very Fifties Christmas; take home a special holiday memento after the tour. Cost is $2 for adults and $1 for children ages 12 and younger. Guided tours only.
  • African American Quilts, 10 a.m. -- 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays and 1-4:30 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 31. This exhibit highlights quilts expressing history, culture and more by local African American women.

Lanesfield School Historic Site

187th and Dillie Rd., Edgerton

  • School open 1-5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. Practice penmanship, cipher math problems on a slate or participate in an old-fashioned spelling bee with a costumed school teacher at Lanesfield School. Built in 1869, the school is the only building remaining from the town of Lanesfield, a former Santa Fe Trail mail stop. Free.
  • Christmas at Lanesfield, 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays Nov. 25- Dec. 31. Discover what Christmas meant to school children in rural Kansas at the turn of the 20th century. The school will be decorated for a 1904 Christmas, and visitors can make their own Christmas ornament.

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
