Walgreens store planned for 75th and Quivira site

Shawnee soon will be getting a third Walgreens drug store.

Shawnee Planning Commission Monday approved a site plan for a Walgreens at 75th Street and Quivira Road, to be built where a bank is currently located. The store will increase the number of pharmacies available in Shawnee, though most are east of Interstate 435.

The Commission had previously approved plans to raze the current Brotherhood bank and split the bank's lot into two lots. A new building for the bank would be constructed to the east, while a retail building, now known to be Walgreens, was shown on the western portion of the lot.

The 14,820-square-foot store will be the third in the city, less than two miles from the existing Walgreens at 11021 Shawnee Mission Pkwy. Plans were approved in 2004 for another Walgreens in the Woodsonia West retail center at Johnson Drive and Roberts Street, but construction has yet to begin. The site plan for the store will expire at the end of this year.

In November last year, a Walgreens corporate spokeswoman said the company hoped to open the store this year. But in June, Gary Rogers, realtor Woodsonia West, said Walgreens officials had told him they would break ground by Sept. 1 at the latest. Paul Chaffee, city planning director, said the store has yet to obtain a building permit.

The Walgreens stores will add to the small number of pharmacies available in Shawnee. Other than grocery store pharmacies, there is a CVS Pharmacy, 13438 W. 62nd Terr., and The Medicine Shoppe, 6232 Nieman Rd.

The Commission approved the store's site plans unanimously Monday, with Commissioner Augie Bogina abstaining from the vote.

In other business, the Commission:

¢ Reviewed the city's Capital Improvement Plan and recommended that the City Council move up construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Johnson Drive and Roberts Street.

¢ Approved a revised site plan for a community center addition for Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th St.

¢ Approved revised site plan for an awning for Hartman Hardware, 11018 Johnson Dr.

¢ Tabled until Aug. 20 a preliminary plat for two residential lots for Thakur Estates, 6825 Renner Rd.
