Obituary: Richard Becker

LENEXA
Richard Becker, 76, former mayor of Lenexa, died Sunday, June 24, 2007, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Memorial Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Lenexa Community Center, Santa Fe and Pflumm. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Amos Family Chapel of Lenexa, 10113 Lenexa Dr.
The family suggests memorial contributions in his name to the National Kidney Foundation, 6405 Metcalf, Suite 204, Overland Park KS 66202 or Johnson County Community College Foundation.
A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date in St. Louis, MO.
Mr. Becker was born April 16, 1931, in St. Louis, Mo. He served in the U.S. Navy and was an account executive for Channel 41 for 22 years. First elected to the Lenexa City Council in 1979, Mr. Becker served as mayor of Lenexa from 1983 to 1995. He moved to the Kansas Legislature in 1995 when he was appointed to fill an unexpired term. He later served one full term in the Kansas Senate, from 1996 to 2000. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated from Ottawa University.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Clarence Becker. Survivors include his wife, Nancy, of the home; a daughter, Andrea Gentry of Lenexa; one son, Brian S. Becker of Leakesville, Miss; a sister, Sister George of the Little Sisters of the Poor, Oregon, Ohio; three brothers, Ray Becker of House Springs, Mo.; Al Becker of Glen Carbon, Ill.; and Lou Becker of Florissant, Mo. There are four grandchildren.

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
