The Shawnee Mission School Board this week honored students creating art through the Reflections program of the National Congress of Parent and Teachers.
At Monday's school board meeting representatives from the National PTA presented awards to students who created works of art based on the theme "My Favorite Place." Lauren Meier of National PTA said 26 schools in the Shawnee Mission district participated, producing over 1,000 entries. Meier said the purpose of the program is to ensure quality arts education and encourage students to create works of art.
Medals were handed out to students in the categories of literature, photography, visual arts, musical composition, film/video production and, a new category this year, dance choreography. Four awards were given out in each category, one at each grade level, K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
Among the winners was Breann Walker, a student at Shawanoe Elementary School, who was cited for a film/video production.
Board president Susan Metsker said events like this one makes the Good News portion of board meetings her favorite.
"I love hearing about students and parents and great things happening in the district," Metsker said. "It gets me fired up every time."
Board members also approved the purchase of new interactive wireless tablets to be used in classrooms in conjunction with projectors. The tablets and software interact with the projector to allow teachers and students to interact wirelessly with information on the projector screen. The bid for 1,600 units including the tablet, software and training was approved at $484,240.
At Monday's meeting, the board also accepted $6,000,000 in grant money from Johnson County collected in sales taxes and approved bids to upgrade the fire alarm system at Broken Arrow Elementary and refinish the gym floor at Shawnee Mission North High School.
