A season to be thankful
November 19, 2007
With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us, the city in a football frenzy over the Kansas and Missouri game on Saturday, and the high school sports season at a lull, I am taking a minute to talk about one of the prep games’ biggest fans. Tom Mordy is a Shawnee Mission North High School sports fan. In my career covering sports, I have met a lot of people who love high school sports, but he is the most passionate high school sports fans that I know. He is in his 40s, and I have known him since I was in second grade.
SMNW swimmers dive into new season
November 19, 2007
Shawnee Mission Northwest boys’ swim team roster is filled with novice and experienced swimmers, and coach Scott Virden couldn’t be happier. Virden has the luxury of mixing accomplished swimmers with a group of freshmen who have competed together in club swimming for a number of years. This week those swimmers practiced for the Cougars first days in the pool. “We have about 29 guys out,” Virden said. “It’s about what I expected. I’ve heard a lot about this freshman class coming up. They’re a pretty close bunch of guys. I think I have about the most freshmen of anyone.”
Cougar football players name captains for last season
November 19, 2007
The 2007 Shawnee Mission Northwest football team gathered one final time on Sunday to talk about the tremendous season and winning. The keynote speaker of the evening was Van Rose, the coach of Northwest’s 14-time Boys Class 6A State Cross Country championship teams. Rose is a coach who knows a little something about winning. He knows what it takes to get there and stay there. He’s been to a place the Northwest football team wants to go; and he knows you get there through work ethic. And that’s exactly what Northwest head football coach Aaron Barnett wanted the evening to be about, to honor the commitment put in by his 2007 squad, to hear from a man who knows the benefits of a strong work ethic, and to make sure that those returning stay committed to that same ethic for next year and beyond. The culminating event was the naming of the team’s captains for the 2007 season.

Playoff halftime brings apologies
November 19, 2007
Representatives of both schools have apologized after fans were upset by two incidents at the Nov. 9 Shawnee Mission Northwest-Olathe North football game. The game was the Class 6A quarterfinal, and the controversy started when the band directors at Northwest decided to have the band play while an injured Olathe player was lying on the field. The two schools were playing a close quarterfinal football game on Nov. 9. The halftime score was 7-7. Olathe North kicker Chad Latka had attempted a field goal just before halftime and was injured on the play. As the clock went from 0:00 to halftime, Latka lay on the field. Players from both teams made their way into the locker room. Meanwhile, Latka lay on the field. He felt some tingling in his extremities and so medical professionals, as a precaution, decided to take him to Kansas University Hospital. They thought he would be OK, but decided to have him examined as a matter of protocol, Olathe North athletic director Lane Green said. As they waited, Shawnee Mission Northwest bandleaders and administrators were discussing whether or not the band should play while Latka was on the field. They were unsure how long halftime would last. The students had worked hard and wanted a chance to play.

Point of View

Do you think it is important for Shawnee to be bicycle-friendly?

I think it’s important. I do love and use the paths, but it would be nice to have lanes so we could use bikes to run errands - saving gas!
