Shawnee — The Johnson County Park and Recreation District will have a Lights On Afterschool Rally Oct. 12 at Shawnee Mission Park.

The event will include about 1,800 children from the 25 Johnson County Afterschool Care Programs. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. at the Theatre in the Park, 7710 Renner Rd., and Shawnee Mission Park Beach, 7900 Renner Rd.

The rally in support of afterschool programs will be one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation that day organized by the Afterschool Alliance. The Johnson County Park and Recreation Afterschool Care Program has after school care programs in 25 area elementary schools in the Shawnee Mission, De Soto and Gardner school districts.

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
