Ownership change for store

Designer Consignment, 12205 Shawnee Mission Pkwy., has changed ownership. Ron and Sherry Jackson of Overland Park purchased the store earlier this year.

"We are longtime residents and fell in love with the store from our very first visit," Sherry Jackson said. "The previous owners had a great reputation in the community and had built a fantastic base of loyal consigners and customers."

The 5,000-square-foot store brings together buyers and sellers of gently-used furniture and home accessories. The store prices and displays the items, with 50 percent of the sale price going back to the consigner.

The Jackson's daughter, Ginger, serves as the store's interior decorator and helps show customers how to make a personal statement in their home decorating.

The Jacksons say they try to set a fair price for consigner's items while providing customers with quality used items at a fraction of the cost in the retail market, and most items sell within 90 days. Many items are also featured on the store's Web site, www.designerconsignment.biz, where customers can sign up to receive promotional alerts twice a month.

Remodelers volunteer

Two Shawnee businessmen were among 50 members of the Kansas City National Association of Home Remodeling Industry who recently volunteered labor and materials to "Operation Soldier Assist."

Mike Moore, owner of Construction Plus in Shawnee, and Hank Bednar, owner of Bednar Interiors, Inc. - Remodeling and Design in Shawnee, helped renovate the home of Sgt. George Bellis, a member of the Missouri National Guard who was severely injured in 2003 while serving in Iraq. Bellis and his, wife, Tricia, and three children live in Lowry City, Mo.

"Operation Soldier Assist" was a community service project of Kansas City NARI in cooperation with the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Association of the United States Army.

Talking points

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
