October 30, 2007
Several days removed from a disappointing district championship loss to Olathe East, the Cougars are now in the process of moving on and putting a game they had opportunities to win behind them. The Cougars are doing the only thing their fans would expect them to do improving for the playoffs. “The kids are disappointed that they lost a ballgame,” Northwest coach Aaron Barnett said. “But the mindset here is that Olathe East is a good football team. We had our opportunities to win. It just didn’t happen.”

Jaguars defeat Harmon, but miss playoffs
October 30, 2007
A Friday night in late October can deliver the thrill of victory and the pain of missed opportunities. Often on the same night. For the same team. Last Friday that team was the Mill Valley Jaguars, who dominated the second half in a 30-14 win over J.C. Harmon High School in district play and then had to wait for the results of the Bishop Miege and St. Thomas Aquinas matchup to find out if the Jaguars were in the playoffs. When the result came down that Bishop Miege had trounced the Saints, 36-19, the Jaguars were left with an overall record of 6-3, a 2-1 district record, a winning percentage of .667, and no slot in the State 5A playoffs.
Northwest soccer team ends year with regional loss
October 30, 2007
The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys soccer team fought its way to a No. 5 at the 2007 Kansas 6A Northeast Regional 2 by outlasting sluggish starts, finding their rhythm and winning the game. That philosophy put the Cougars in the Class 6A Regional final last Thursday against No. 2 seed Olathe South, and was almost enough for Northwest. However, in a game that pitted two stellar defenses against each other, the Falcons outlasted the Cougars 1-0 in double overtime at Olathe District Activity Center to claim the regional crown and a trip to state.
St. James Academy loses state title match to Topeka-Hayden
Volleyball team finishes year with 45-1 record
October 30, 2007
St. James Academy’s volleyball team ended its winning streak in the final match of the Class 4A Volleyball season. The Thunder lost to Topeka Hayden in three games and finished second in the state. St. James won a close first game, 25-23, but lost the second game 23-25. Topeka-Hayden won the third game 25-15 to bring home the Class 4A State title. Thunder coach Kim Dorsey said her team was a little nervous in the match. While they hadn’t lost a match all season, they also hadn’t played for a state title before. “There is no shame in losing to a team like Hayden who has been there the last three years and knows what it is like to lose, with eight seniors and Corrine Stringer who is definitely one of the best, if not the best left side hitter in the state of Kansas,” she said. “St. James showed their lack of experience in the third game, but played a tough match and gave a really great and well balanced team a run for their money.”

Talking points

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
