- In most drivers’ license examination guidebooks there’s a statement that reads something like, “When unsure of speed, it is best to go with the flow of traffic.” That same axiom holds true in golf. With no score breaking lower than 100, the Shawnee Mission Northwest girls’ golf team still finds itself in the thick of the Sunflower League race after finishing the first leg of the League meet in fifth place Sept. 11th at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence. Junior Rachel Noland shot a 100 even to help lead a Cougar squad that had its other finishers finish in the low 100s as well. For Northwest head coach John Reiff, the current placing of the Cougar squad could yield some improving results.

- The Shawnee Mission Northwest gymnastics team is showing no signs of slowing down this season. After Northwest finished first in the first meet of the season Sept. 5 at Shawnee Mission East Invitational, the Cougars followed up with another win at the Cougar-hosted Northwest Triad last Tuesday and then finished second at the Shawnee Mission Invitational at Shawnee Mission North on Saturday.

- The St. James Academy volleyball team kept its winning streak alive last weekend by winning the Topeka-Hayden tournament crown in five matches and moving their record to16-0 on the year. Led by junior Kelly Kolich’s 47 kills, the Thunder defeated four tough teams on their way to the tournament title. St. James head coach Nancy Dorsey and the rest of the Thunder relished the opportunity to play some tough squads and enjoyed their time at the tourney.

- Shawnee Mission North cross-country runner Alex Hendee won the boys’ race at the Turner Invitational on Wednesday, nudging out his teammate Nathan Slonicker who placed second with a time of 17:39.30. With their performances, North placed first in the meet with 30 points.

- Shawnee Mission North led Lawrence 14-10 early in the fourth quarter on Friday but couldn’t hold on for the victory. The fourth quarter when LHS quarterback Clint Pinnick went to work, creating three touchdown drives in less than nine minutes to lead Lawrence to a 31-21 victory in a game the Lions desperately wanted against the winless Indians. “One big play can change the game,” Pinnick said, “just like it happened.”
