Unfortunately for North, Northwest exhibited a multifaceted attack in a 33-0 win on Friday.

- Mill Valley quarterback Luke Lawyer and wide receiver Miles Malec turned the team’s offense into the run and shoot Friday as the team’s passing game went from potentially potent to lethal. The pair combined for four touchdowns and led the Jaguars to a 35-0 win over Tonganoxie.

- Bonner Springs’ head football coach Lew Kasselman’s wife, Linda, answers the phone about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Lew isn’t home. “He’ll be home soon, but we are going to church at 6 p.m.,” she says. “Call back around 7 p.m.” Is it too late, do you need time alone? “It is football season, so we don’t get nights to ourselves,” she says with a laugh.

- The Shawnee Mission Northwest gymnastics squad continued its roll through the 2007 season last week by claiming team championships in two meets. The Cougars have won all but one meet this season, but one this season with that finish being a second-place nod. On Sept. 18, the Cougars played host to Lawrence, Lawrence Free State, Olathe East, and Olathe Northwest in SMNW’s second home meet of the season.

- The Mill Valley boys’ cross-country team ran its best race in two years at the Tonganoxie Invitational on Monday. The Jaguars finished in second place with 87 points. Wamego won the meet with 28 points. Mill Valley had four runners medal in the meet.

Still, a volleyball homecoming of sorts was good news for head coach Nancy Dorsey and her team as the Thunder picked up two more wins, sweeping KC Christian (25-8, 25-9) and Turner High School (25-12, 25-21) in the home triad.

- Cougars volleyball takes league match

- Playing their best volleyball since late August, the Shawnee Mission Northwest volleyball team claimed its first Sunflower League win of the 2007 last Thursday by downing Leavenworth 28-30, 25-18, and 16-9 in a Lawrence High-hosted triad. The Cougars then narrowly lost to the Lions 23-25, 23-25 to close out the evening. Northwest head coach Holly Davidson said she was extremely pleased with the effort her team put forth in claiming their first conference win. “I really thought that we played excellently,” Davidson said. “I think that the girls anticipated better and were understanding where we needed to get the ball. We eliminated our errors.”

- Rain wiped out Thursday’s scheduled races at the Tonganoxie Invitational and a Monday rescheduling conflicted with school plans, so the Maranatha Eagles were unable to send a full squad to any race last week. However, not all was lost for the Eagles as the cancellation allowed head coach Bianca Williams to place three of her boys’ squad members into the KC Metro Meet at Raymore-Peculiar High School.

- SM North loses volleyball match to Silver Lake

- Members of the Shawnee Mission North volleyball team did some nice things in the Topeka-Seaman volleyball tournament on Saturday, but not enough to advance into the finals competition.
North volleyball players went 1-3 in the pool play portion of the tournament.
North lost to Silver Lake, 19-25, 19-25 in a qualifier match. If North had won, it would have advanced to the finals round of competition.

- During the first half of Monday’s game, Mill Valley soccer player Alex Linthicum was pushed down in the Shawnee Mission East goal box. The Mill Valley bench wanted a call, but the referee didn’t call for a penalty kick. In a world of ifs and buts, if the penalty kick had been called and the Jaguars had converted it, then maybe the game would have had played out differently, Jaguars coach Arlan Vomhof said.

Do you think it is important for Shawnee to be bicycle-friendly?
I think it’s important. I do love and use the paths, but it would be nice to have lanes so we could use bikes to run errands - saving gas!
