Letter: Not enough space
September 25, 2007
Shawnee To the Editor:
I can’t believe that the bond issue failed AGAIN!
The bottom line is, we have too many kids and not enough space. That is a fact, and it’s just going to get worse.
I can only assume that people who voted no did so for a variety of reasons. Maybe they are unhappy with the district about something like boundary changes. Maybe they didn’t like some part of the proposal like the early childhood center. Maybe they don’t want bigger schools, or maybe they were just having a bad day. Whatever‚ there are as many reasons as there are voters.
However, there is no way that every issue can be addressed to make everyone happy. We have to trust our school board and administrators to come up with the best compromise possible. If we wait for a bond issue that is perfect and exactly what each of us wants, it will never happen.
Like it or not, we live in the fastest-growing school district in the state. What’s wrong with us? Are we that shortsighted and blind to the facts?
I have lived in western Shawnee for 10 years, and this is the first time that I have ever thought that maybe it is not the best place around for my family. My son who attends Mill Valley already complains about how crowded it is. My kids may end up having to travel for miles to get to their high school, rather than going to the one down the street.
I hope that whatever the board proposes next, we are able to come together as a community and support their plan. We have to look at the big picture, rather than our individual agendas. There simply is not enough space. Something has to be done, and soon.

How often do you go to the library?
“I almost never go there at all — only with my wife, Kim. She checks out, I’d say, at least three books a week. The kids go with her, and she teaches them how to find things.”

Amen to these thoughts. What will they do about it? Begin attending BOE Meetings in De Soto on Monday, October 1, 2007. www.usd232.org for more info. Open to the public. You are sure to be amused so bring your popcorn and cotton candy. It will, undoubtedly, be a good show.
