- Shawnee Mission North High School students will offer a glimpse of what it is like to be mentally disabled in their spring play, “The Boys Next Door.” The play, written by Tom Griffin, tells the story of four mentally disabled men who live in a group home and their social worker, Jackie. Senior Gregory Myers plays Arnold Wiggins, senior Terrance Newman plays Lucien P. Smith, senior Tylor Loxterman plays Norman Bulansky, junior Alex Hill plays Barry Klemper and senior Kathryn Bowman plays Jackie.

- Mill Valley High School senior Mark Grinstead made school history in his first meet of the track season last week. He threw148-feet-3-inches in the discus and broke the school record. “He is a senior and has been throwing great all preseason,” coach Chris Dunback said.

- The weather was cold last Thursday. Games were played in windy conditions. Parents packed blankets, scarves and hats. Players wore gloves and did whatever they could to stay warm. Shawnee Mission North coach Jayson Poppinga was right at home, though. He is used to the cold. “This is like summer in North Dakota,” he told the players while his team was preparing to play Lawrence, the same thing he has said throughout the practice season. “They are complaining about how cold it was.”

- The Kansas State Kids Wrestling Championships in Topeka featured a strong visiting contingent from Shawnee on Saturday, as several Cougar kids club members proved their wrestling prowess at the Topeka Expo Center. Ross Whitmore, Kids’ Club veteran and KSHSAA State qualifier, earned a fifth-place finish in his division over the weekend. He will move on to the Brute Adidas Nationals in an attempt to win back-to-back All-America honors.

- Shawnee Mission North pitcher Gage Daniels spent last winter working to become a better pitcher and it showed, despite a 7-0 loss to Lawrence on Thursday. He’d toiled in the weight room, worked on conditioning and done everything possible to get into shape for the year.
