Bonner swimmers gain experience in first two meets

April 2, 2008

Bonner Springs athletes began adapting to coach Tierney Thompson's philosophies on swimming last week by competing in every event.

Thompson said she wants swimmers to try a lot of events and said she hopes to build a versatile team of swimmers who can eventually place in a lot of events.

She said she thinks that the swimmers surprised themselves with how well they performed in events that they had never swum before.

Bonner Springs managed 5th and 6th place finishes in the 200-meter freestyle relays. The team also had a 3rd place finish in the 400-meter relay.

Emily Herre finished third in the 100-meter butterfly, followed by Joyce Hilario in fifth and Teran Holter in seventh.

Bonner Springs followed up its performance at Blue Valley by competing in the 12-team Topeka Invitational on March 27.

A lot of the teams entered in the tournament were from western Kansas and had much bigger teams than Bonner Springs.

Bonner Springs had six swimmers place in the meet.

The 200-medley relay team of Holter, Herre, Aubree Miller and Kaley Withers finished in eighth place. Another team of Hilario, Monica Sorensen, Holly Luke and Nancy Garcia finished 15th in the same event.

Jaclyn Lira, Hilario, Miller and Herre placed 10th in the 200-freestyle relay.

The team of Garcia, Sorensen, Withers and Laura Rink finished 14th in the 400 freestyle relay.

The team competes at 4 p.m. today in a meet at Shawnee Mission East against East, Piper and Bishop Ward.

Talking points

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
