Shawnee’s annual Tidy Town event, picking up large items for disposal, will be April 26 and May 3 this year. The free curbside, large-item pick up is for those items not collected by routine trash services. The service is provided by Deffenbaugh Industries. Shawnee residents east of Pflumm Road may put their large items out for pick up April 26; residents west of Pflumm should put their items out May 3.

SMNW soccer team has winning week

The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls soccer team had a bumpy stretch of games last week, but emerged with a 2-1 record. Northwest drilled Topeka West, 7-0, in the season opener on March 31. Taylor Isenhower overwhelmed West’s defense by scoring five goals. Teammate Molly Slechta scored two other goals. It was a great start for a Northwest team that also played Topeka West in the 2007 opener.

Mill Valley uses double play to defeat Bishop Miege

When Mill Valley and Bishop Miege have met on the athletic field of competition this year, the games have produced dramatic plays. During football season, in district play Bishop Miege trailed late in the game. The Stags completed a long pass to the two-yard line and the receiver got out of bounds. The Stags thought there were a couple seconds left on the clock. The referee ruled no time was left, and Mill Valley won.

Shawnee Mission West won the Mill Valley Invitational with 152 points. Mill Valley placed second with 112 points . Mark Grinstead threw 142-feet-7 in the discus to win the event. Shawn Stene placed third with a toss of 124-3.5. Chris Mayer of Mill Valley placed fourth with a throw of 118-11. Matt Huderle placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 37-0.

Mill Valley girls win at home

With multiple girls placing in numerous events and standout performances by a few athletes, the Mill Valley girls track and field team crushed the competition during its home invitational on Thursday. “I thought for the weather conditions our kids competed very well,” coach Mark Peck said. “It was wet, cold and cool. I was pleased with some of our marks and times.” The Jaguars scored 258 points and defeated the second place De Soto, who finished with 89 points.
North baseball loses two games

Shawnee Mission North lost a pair of baseball games last week. The Indians lost to Shawnee Mission West, 6-1 on April 1. North had no hits in the game, scoring on an error.

St. James Academy soccer player Bethany Smith is taking advantage of scoring opportunities this season. She has scored five goals and led the Thunder to a 4-0-1 record this season. Smith and Rachel Weimer give the Thunder a one-two scoring punch this season. Weimer has three goals and two assists. “We are excited to have both of them, they are tough to guard with one defender,” coach Rick Enna said.
