Jim Allen of Shawnee filed Monday to challenge John Segale for the District 2 seat on the Johnson County Board of Commissioners.

The 2nd District includes all of Shawnee and Lake Quivira and a portion of Lenexa. Segale, a former Shawnee City Council member, was elected to the county seat in 2004.

Allen, 56, served as Shawnee’s mayor from 1993 to 2004 and for eight years prior to that, he served on the Council. He is a former chair of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors and currently serves as president of the Shawnee Sister Cities Committee.

Allen, an insurance agent, previously had stated his intention to run for the seat in October.

“What I offer to the people of Lenexa, Lake Quivira and Shawnee is a sound vision and a solid voice to represent them on the Johnson County Commission,” Allen said in a release Monday. “It was the highest honor of my life to serve my community as mayor, now having spent some time away from public life, I am ready for new challenges with a renewed energy.”

Allen also said his background and experience in the business community and his record of public service would help him make a difference.

Allen received his degree from Emporia State University and holds an MBA from Rockhurst University. He also is a member of the Shawnee Rotary Club and is a former Grand Knight of the Shawnee Knights of Columbus Council 2332.

Talking points

How often do you go to the library?

“I almost never go there at all — only with my wife, Kim. She checks out, I’d say, at least three books a week. The kids go with her, and she teaches them how to find things.”
