When Mill Valley and Bishop Miege have met on the athletic field of competition this year, the games have produced dramatic plays.

During football season, in district play Bishop Miege trailed late in the game. The Stags completed a long pass to the two-yard line and the receiver got out of bounds.

The Stags thought there were a couple seconds left on the clock. The referee ruled no time was left, and Mill Valley won.

Monday's baseball game between the two schools featured another dramatic play that helped Mill Valley win the game, 7-4.

In the sixth inning, Bishop Miege had runners at first and third base.

The ball was hit high and shallow into right centerfield. A slew of Mill Valley players rushed toward the ball and John Theiss made the diving catch.

"I just went on my knees and reacted to the ball," he said. "If it drops, they score two runs for sure."

After the catch, the Jaguars threw home but couldn't get the tag on the runner, who rushed in from third base.

Mill Valley players then threw to third and asked the runner if the Bishop Miege player left early. The umpire said he did.

Bishop Miege fans were upset. The play halted the Stags' rally as the inning ended a short time later when a player was caught off second base. Neither team scored the rest of the game.

Mill Valley won the game after trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the third inning.

The Stags scored two runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead against Mill Valley starter Curtis Peavler.

The Jaguars got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when Miles Malec tripled with two outs to score J.J. Grovenburg and Luke Lawyer. The inning concluded with a groundout.

Bishop Miege failed to score in the top of the fourth inning.

In the home half of the inning, Andy See struck out, but he reached base on a throwing error. He scored on a double by Curtis Peavler.

The Jaguars tied the game 4-4 on a hit by Grovenburg.

In the fifth inning, Luke Lawyer doubled and scored. He advanced to third base on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. See then reached on an infield hit, and Mill Valley scored two runs in the inning.

Talking points

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
