Shawnee Mission West probably wished it could have stayed darker a little longer during a power failure on Friday. After a nearly 30-minute delay of the tip off of the boys basketball game between West and Shawnee Mission Northwest, the contest finally got underway when the lights came on at the Northwest basketball court.

Though the Shawnee Mission Northwest wrestling team’s final home meet didn’t yield the team results they had hoped for, the Cougars found no shortage of good news during last week’s action. Wednesday night brought Cougar Senior Night as Northwest hosted a double dual with Shawnee Mission West and Shawnee Mission East. Seniors such as Tyler Williams were honored for their contributions to the Cougar wrestling team over the last few seasons.

Shawnee Mission to begin negotiations

Negotiation teams representing the Shawnee Mission Board of Education and the National Education Association of Shawnee Mission will meet Feb. 6 to begin discussing the contract for the 2008-09 school year. Additional meetings will be determined and subsequently announced. The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 4:30 p.m., in the board room at the McEachen Administrative Center, 7235 Antioch Rd., Overland Park.

The drills, sprints and matches that Mill Valley wrestlers started in November have been in preparation for the last few weeks of the season. The long road trips across the state to western Kansas and back have been designed to build postseason champions. The built in struggles with competition against top teams from around the state have been designed for the last three tournaments of the season, which begin this week with the Kaw Valley League meet at Lansing High School.

The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball team lost a pair of contests last week as the effort to get a young Cougar squad some valuable experience continues. On Wednesday, Northwest lost to Blue Valley West, and later lost a match-up with Shawnee Mission West. The Cougars are still looking for their second victory of the season. Northwest looked to be heading for a good week in the opening minutes of their game against Blue Valley West. Sydney Jones opened the scoring with a driving layup from right to left that put the Cougars up 2-0.

North girls team defeats Olathe North at home

Shawnee Mission North’s girls basketball team defeated Olathe North 62-38 on Monday. The Indians outscored the Eagles 16-4 in the second quarter and led 25-17 at halftime. In the third quarter, Shawnee Mission North built a 40-26 lead by scoring 15 points and holding Olathe North to 9.

Relay team qualifies for state in league race

It took until almost the very last meet of the regular season, but the Shawnee Mission Northwest boys swim team finally got it done. The Cougars 400-meter freestyle relay team of David Koeller, Alex Severance, Jared Pessetto, and Kerry Cobb broke the state qualifying mark of 3:37.12 by recording a 3:36.02 in Saturday’s Sunflower League Championships at Chisholm Trail Junior High in Olathe. The mark enabled the 400-free squad to join Northwest’s 200-free team of Cobb, Evan Mesh, Jordan Faltermeier, and Alex Zimmer. The 200-medley relay squad of Sean Giddings, Andrew Healey, Mesh, and Zimmer as qualifiers for the state meet.

Shawnee Mission North continued its strong play of the last week with a 47-29 win Friday over Olathe Northwest. North played close against Shawnee Mission East on Tuesday, 49-38, in a game that pitted coach B.J. Hair against his brother, Shawn. B.J. Hair said he thought his team received a boost from the East game.
