February 19, 2008
The Shawnee Mission School Board last week approved about $19.5 million in bids for Shawnee Mission Northwest High School renovations and expansions.
The work, approved at the Feb. 11 board meeting, is part of the $184 million bond issue that voters approved in April 2004.
Construction at Northwest is expected to begin in the spring and be completed in 2009.
Plans include:
• An auxiliary gym and locker room to be located on the west side of the existing gym.
• Science laboratory renovations to accommodate curriculum changes.
• An auditorium renovation with new lighting and sound systems and a new fly-system to change backdrops.
• A performing arts addition that will feature new band, choral and orchestra rooms.
• Additional drama and art rooms.
• Renovations to the school’s environmental classroom that houses wild animals.
• Pre-engineering equipment upgrades.
• Wrestling room improvements.

Talking points
How often do you go to the library?
“I almost never go there at all — only with my wife, Kim. She checks out, I’d say, at least three books a week. The kids go with her, and she teaches them how to find things.”
