- Ryne Cokeley was about to describe the final match of his state championship season to his classmates at St. James Academy on Monday when the school’s athletic director stepped in. “Ryne won state last week. That accomplishment is over the top amazing for him to come in as a freshman and beat people who were older than he is and win state,” A.D. Andy Tylicki said. “It is just an amazing accomplishment. You all need to stand up and give it up for him.”

On a night when Indians’ fans paid tribute to the outstanding accomplishments of past North coaches and athletes with inductions into the school’s Hall of Fame, the Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball team was crowned co-champions of the Sunflower League.

- Shawnee high school basketball teams have played the entire season for a seed and the right to win two games and go to state. In Class 6A competition, Shawnee Mission Northwest enters as the No. 1 seed and will play host to Olathe Northwest, 4-16, at 7 p.m. Thursday. Northwest won a share of the Sunflower League championship this season.

- The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball team played a more inspired brand of basketball last Thursday at Shawnee Mission North. However, it was not enough as the Cougars fell to the Indians, 50-37, and finished the regular season with just two wins.

- Mill Valley wrestler Jack Delashmit wanted to win his last match. He’d run too many stairs, sweated too many hours in weight room and had too many laughs with friends on road trips across Kansas to go out with a loss. In addition, he was battling a cold in the tournament, but pressed on.

- Mill Valley guard Caleb Smith pulled up and made a three pointer to extend the team’s lead to 11 points with 5:29 left in the fourth quarter over Tonganoxie. The shot snapped an 8-0 run by the Chieftains. Tonganoxie never got any closer in the basketball game. “He hit a big three after Tonganoxie cut it to eight in the fourth quarter that really closed the game for them,” coach Justin Bogart said. Mill Valley, 8-12, went on to win the game 64-49.

- The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls bowling team turned in its best performances of the season last week. First, the Cougars reached a new record high at the Shawnee Mission District meet on Thursday. Northwest broke its week-old scoring record by bowling a 2,057 at the district meet.

- The smallest school to field a bowling team in Kansas proved this season that size doesn’t matter when you can roll a hook. Despite being the only Class 2A team in the state to field a team, the Maranatha Academy Eagles boys bowling team won seven games in the 2008 season - all against larger schools. Led by freshman Connor Johnson and seniors Benny Belknap and Kyle Mowrer, the Eagles ended the season in regional action Saturday at the Mission Bowl in Mission. Belknap finished just 17 pins out of the running for the state tournament.
