Teams to compete in substate

Shawnee high school basketball teams have played the entire season for a seed and the right to win two games and go to state.

In Class 6A competition, Shawnee Mission Northwest enters as the No. 1 seed and will play host to Olathe Northwest, 4-16, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Northwest won a share of the Sunflower League championship this season.

The winner of the game would play for a right to qualify for state on Saturday against the winner of Olathe East and Olathe South. The two teams each have 12-8 records.

The game would take place either at 5 or 7:45 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence High School.

The championship game is one of two being played at the school, and game times would be determined after the results of first-round games. The times are based on how far a team would have to travel to get to a game.

In the 6A girls competition being hosted by Lawrence, Shawnee Mission Northwest enters as the No. 8 seed with a 2-17 record.

The Cougars will play at Olathe South, 18-2, at 7 p.m. tonight. The winner of the game would play at either 5 or 7:45 p.m. Friday at Lawrence High School.

The championship game is one of two being played at the school, and game times would be determined after the results of first-round games. The criteria is based on how far teams have to travel to a game.

In 6A substate competition being hosted by Shawnee Mission East, a battle of brothers will take place.

B.J. Hair will lead Shawnee Mission North on the road at 7 p.m. Thursday against Shawnee Mission East and coach Shawn Hair.

North, 4-16, will be the No. 8 seed against East, 15-5, who also is the top seed.

The championship game of the substate would take place either at 5 or 7:45 p.m. Saturday at East.

The winner of the game would play the winner of No. 4 seed Blue Valley Northwest, 12-8, and No. 5 seed Blue Valley North, 6-14.

The championship game is one of two being played at the school and game times would be determined after the results of first-round games.

In girls' competition, No. 6 seed Shawnee Mission North, 10-10, will play at No. 3 seed Shawnee Mission West at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The winner would play the winner of No. 2 seed Shawnee Mission East, 16-4, and No. 7 seed Blue Valley West at either 5 or 7:45 p.m. Friday.

In Class 5A substate competition, Mill Valley boys basketball players will play on the road at Sumner Academy at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Mill Valley, 8-12, enters as the No. 7 seed. Sumner Academy, 16-4, is the No. 2 seed. The winner of the game would play the winner of No. 3 seed Pittsburg, 16-4, and Kansas City Harmon, 9-11 at either 5 or 7:45 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas.

The championship game is one of two being played at the school and game times would be determined after the results of first-round games by the host school.

In girls competition, No. 4 seed Mill Valley will play host to No. 5 seed Sumner Academy at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Mill Valley enters with a 12-8 record and Sumner Academy is 5-13. The winner of the game would play either at 5 or 7:45 p.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The time would be determined after the first round games.

The winner would play the winner of No. 1 seed Bishop Miege, 13-7, and Kansas City Harmon, 2-17.

In 4A competition, No. 2 seed St. James Academy, 16-3, played No. 7 seed Piper, 9-10, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Academy.

Results of the game were not available at press time.

The winner would play against either Basehor-Linwood or Eudora High Schools on Friday at Spring Hill High School. Game times are to be determined. Basehor, 14-5, is the No. 3 seed and Eudora, 9-10, is the No. 6 seed.

The winner of Friday's game would advance to the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill High School.

The top half of the bracket features No. 1 seed Baldwin, 16-3, playing against No. 8 seed De Soto, 9-10.

No. 4 seed Bishop Ward will play No. 5 seed Spring Hill in the other first round games. The two teams would play Friday in semifinal play. The winner would advance to Saturday's championship game.
