Shawnee Mission North upsets Olathe South for home victory

Shawnee Mission North principal Richard Kramer worked crowd control Friday night when he got an unexpected surprise. An excited fan gave him a bear hug in the moments after Shawnee Mission North’s 47-45 win over Olathe South at Shawnee Mission North High School. “We watched film and still don’t know who the person was,” coach B.J. Hair said. “It was kind of funny.” There were bear hugs all around Friday. All seemed right in the Shawnee Mission North basketball world. The team had won a game a close game in regulation.

Olathe tour opens with loss to East

The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball team started its 2008 “Tour of Olathe” in inauspicious fashion Friday, losing a 48-45 road decision to Olathe East. A combination of poor outside shooting, an inability to handle the ball inside hindered the team’s ability to score. In addition, Olathe East guards made numerous three-point shots in the game. After the game, Northwest coach Ben Meseke pondered his squad’s lack of inside scoring.
Bowlers roll into action with meet in Wichita

Way more than a baker’s dozen teams showed up at Saturday’s baker’s meet in Wichita and the Shawnee Mission Northwest boys bowling team found itself in the top third of a field of 24 teams. Their seventh-place finish in its first meet of the season was a surprise to coach Britt Haney who didn’t quite know what to expect from a team that had better tryout numbers from a year ago, but had yet to face any true competition.

A Mill Valley girls basketball player drove toward the rim with the basketball and missed a layup. She drew a foul. Coach Diana Krull yelled in her direction as she walked toward the foul line. “Slow down, you would have made it,” she said.
North girls team falls to Ol. South

Shawnee Mission North girls basketball players allowed to many points in transition during a 56-44 loss to Olathe South Friday. “We did some nice things, but we are giving up too many points in transition right now,” coach Kelly Dennis said. “We work on it every day in practice, we talk about it every day. It is just a matter of the kids doing it. It is hard to play up-tempo when you are giving up points. You have to defend in transition.”
Northwest dominates home swim meet

The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys swim and dive team won its home invitational Saturday with contributions from almost every varsity swimmer. Northwest defeated its nearest opponent by 50 points.

After placing second in the Johnson County Classic in December, Mill Valley wrestler John Logan vowed to do better. “I don’t think it (second) is good at all,” Logan said after the tournament. “I went in expecting to win the tournament. I didn’t. I am not satisfied at all. I expect to take the frustration into the wrestling room and get better.”

KC Outlaws lose pair of games

The Kansas City Junior Outlaws hockey team lost a pair of home games last weekend. The team lost to the DM Oak Leafs 5-0 in a game played Saturday. The Oak Leafs scored three goals in the second period to take control of the game.

St. James Academy girls basketball team loses game to Metro Academy

St. James Academy girls basketball players had the type of loss coach Greg Hohensinner can accept against Metro Academy on Friday. “We lost, but played very well,” Hohensinner said. “I think we showed that we can play with anybody.” Specifically, he liked the fact that his team could collectively answer Metro Academy’s best player, Taber Spani’s, scoring assault.

Cokeley wins Louisburg tourney

Ryne Cokeley just keeps winning matches during his inaugural high school wrestling season. He added the Louisburg Invitational wrestling tournament title to his wrestling resume on Friday. Cokeley, wrestling in the 119-pound weight class, went 3-0 and improved to 14-2 on the season.

St. James Academy guard Joe Kelling played one of his best games of season on Friday. He scored 23 points in St. James Academy to a 53-42 win over Metro Academy. “He scored the ball well and shot well,” Thunder coach Andy Tylicki said.
