Greed, not green

July 2, 2008

To the editor:

While most communities and cities are focused on the benefits of going green, our city officials remain determined to embrace wastefulness. Their shortsighted notion that the Monticello Road Project is good for the community is just one example of this taste for waste. It represents nothing more than an absurd waste of green space, a foolish waste of history and an absolutely ridiculous waste of taxpayer dollars.

The list goes on and on as the costs continue to grow, the facts continue to be concealed and city officials driven by greed continue to wreak havoc with our lives, our homes, our property and most of all your money!

It's a sad day when other community leaders across Kansas and the nation seem to readily grasp the real meaning of going green, yet our city officials can't seem to get past the greed to really get it. Many cities have set fine examples of what it means to create a vision for the future while at the same time working to conserve resources, honor lives and preserve communities. The telltale difference is that they are often doing so in the aftermath of devastating natural disasters while in our situation the disaster we are facing is manmade.

Shawnee needs to learn a lesson from those other brave cities and make a commitment to focus on way less greed and lots more green!

Talking points

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
