Fire quickly doused at Northwest
June 9, 2008
Two Shawnee fire crews responded Thursday after smoke was spotted coming from the roof of the Shawnee Mission Northwest High School gymnasium at about 7 p.m.
Fire marshal John Mattox said a fire started in a debris pile after construction crews had been demolishing old air handling units in a mechanical room on the roof. The fire likely was caused by a piece of hot metal coming in contact with thermal pipe insulation and debris placed next to the mechanical room. It was out by about 7:30 p.m.
Leigh Anne Neal, spokesperson for Shawnee Mission USD 512, said the extent of the damage was located on the roof area outside of the mechanical room. Approximately 100 square feet of roof was damaged by the fire or the chopping away of roof membrane and insulation to extinguish the fire. Two adjacent walls received some damage to metal flashing, metal wall panel and an access ladder.
Neal said the contractors completed temporary repairs to the roof in order to keep the building dry. As this portion of the roof is slated for replacement as part of the bond work, it will be removed and replaced.
The total cost of the damage is estimated at approximately $5,000. The mechanical contractor is responsible for the repairs and the costs associated with them.

Talking points
How often do you go to the library?
“I almost never go there at all — only with my wife, Kim. She checks out, I’d say, at least three books a week. The kids go with her, and she teaches them how to find things.”
