Revised graduation requirements approved
June 10, 2008
Following changes to state graduation requirements made in 2005, the Shawnee Mission USD 512 Board of Education on Monday unanimously approved a revised policy for graduation requirements.
Per the state's policy, students graduating in 2009 will be required to have three science credits instead of two, and one fine arts credit. This limits the elective courses needed to seven and one half units instead of nine and one half units.
All other graduation requirements remain the same.
When the changes were made in 2005, they only applied to incoming freshmen students.
Although the changes wasn't officially part of the policy until Monday, Superintendent Marjorie Kaplan said students in the class of 2009 and later were informed of the changes before they enrolled for courses each year.
The meeting also marked the last for Kaplan, who will retire effective July 1.
