Tennis, tumbling and ghost hunters among classes

The Shawnee Parks and Recreation has several classes for all ages coming up this spring.
All classes are at the Shawnee Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Dr., unless otherwise stated. To register for a Shawnee Parks and Recreation Class call (913) 631-5200 or visit www.cityofshawnee.org.
The following are youth classes:
¢ Quick Start Tennis - This program is a new format to help children ages 5-8 learn to play tennis. Everything has been changed, from the court size and racquet size to the scoring system and the balls in this system to teach youngsters the game. Six 40-minute lessons will cost $40. The class takes place at 6 p.m. Wednesdays beginning March 5.
¢ Volley Tots - Parents and children ages 3-5 will participate together to learn the fundamentals of volleyball under the instruction of coach Eric Majors. This class will help your child develop the necessary skills for running, stretching and having fun. The class will use fun beach balls and other fun items to keep children involved and educated. Class will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesdays beginning March 5, with no class March 19. Six 45-minute classes cost $35.
¢ Beginning tumbling skills - A fun way for beginning tumblers ages 3-5 to gain experience, confidence and much more. The class will cover basic tumbling skills such as somersaults, cartwheels, headstands, handstands, backbends and so forth. Participant also work on fun activities such as bear walks, crab walks and bunny jumps to help improve a young child's gross motor skills. Class members should wear comfortable, tight-fitting clothing like a leotard, and long hair should be in a ponytail. Class will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesdays and began March 4. Six 45-minute classes cost $48.
¢ Cartooning Class - Students ages 8-15 will learn drawing, storyboarding and character development techniques. Class begins at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays starting April 7. The cost for six one-hour workshops is $42. Supplies are included.
The following are classes for adults:
¢ Ballroom II Latin Dance - Enjoy the sizzle of the Latin beat in this six-week ballroom class with instructor Mario Orelus. Students will learn the tango, samba, mambo, cha-cha and the merengue. Ballroom I is not a prerequisite. Partners are encouraged. Classes are at Academy of the Arts, 5413 Martindale. Six 50-minute lessons are $45. Class starts at 7 p.m. on Fridays beginning March 7.
¢ Kansas City Ghosts? - Join in this unbelievable workshop to see and hear what ghost hunters have found in the Kansas City area. Listen to actual audio and video that paranormal activity investigators captured. Be prepared to get goose bumps or become skeptical. Instructors are from Paranormal Activity Investigators of Kansas City. The 90-minute class costs $8. Class starts at 6:30 p.m. March 26.
