- At first, Josh Putthoff thought his 2 1/2-year-old son’s black eyes were just the result of a kid being a kid. It wasn’t until Gabe Putthoff’s regular visit to the eye doctor that his parents discovered what was going on. Their son had tumor in his sinuses caused by neuroblastoma.

- Maranatha Academy track coach Bernie Zarda has lofty expectations for his 2008 team, and with good reason. The Eagles return more than 20 letter winners from a 2007 team that took several athletes to state and returned with three medalists. Almost the entire girls team returns, including two regional champions and two state placers. Emily Smith returns after placing fourth at state in the 300-meter hurdles last year. She joins sophomore Keegan Williams, sixth in the pole vault at last year’s state championships, as two of the top Eagle returnees.

- Ben Meseke has coached all kinds of players. The Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball coach has had players who’ve needed their egos stroked. He’s had players who’ve had issues with others on their team. He’s had players with academic and/or behavior issues. He’s had players who, for whatever reason, couldn’t buy into the team system. But not this season.

- I will never forget the 1985 World Series, when the Kansas City Royals won the world title. I remember thinking the team would win every year. Six-year-olds just don’t know any better. I never imagined that it would be the Royals last world title for at least another 23 years. In retrospect, perhaps I took the Al Michaels “Motley for the title” call for granted.
