Maranatha sends 6 to tennis state
May 6, 2008
From a sheer numbers standpoint, the Maranatha Academy tennis team has to be considered one of the favorites to win the Class 3-2-1A state tournament Friday and Saturday at Wichita State University.
The Eagles are the only team competing at state that is sending a full six-player lineup with both singles players and both doubles teams qualifying.
Sophomore Bryan Thomas (18-5) was the regional champion in singles, and senior Joel Petterson (23-6) placed third.
In doubles, junior Kyle Reighard and sophomore Seth Swank (19-10) placed second. Senior David Kidd and freshman Drew Swank (19-7) finished third.
Claflin will be another favorite as it is sending five players - singles regional champ Taylor Bieberle, doubles regional champs Layton Hickel and Mason Hickel and doubles runner-up Trent Musgrove and Bryan Bieberle.
Wichita Collegiate also is sending five players to state - third-place singles finisher Daniel Ritchie, doubles regional champs Miles Dunne and Brandon Somerhalder and the third-place pair of Paul Abromeit and Wyatt Kesler.
MOORE BACK FOR MORE
Shawnee Mission North junior Kevin Moore is returning to the Class 6A state tournament for the third straight year.
Moore placed third in singles at the Blue Valley North regional and improved his season record to 9-2. More placed second at state as a freshman and seventh as a sophomore.
The 6A state tournament will take place at Goddard High.

Talking points
Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?
Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
