Straub donates food

May 6, 2008

Shawnee-based Straub construction has teamed up with Kansas City Royal Billy Butler to help feed the hungry.

As part of “Hit it a Ton” campaign, each time Butler hits a home run during the 2008 season, Straub Construction will donate funds for one ton of food to Bishop Sullivan Center, and Butler will match Straub’s donation.

The campaign was launched in April, when 20 Straub employees helped Butler sack groceries and distributed food at the St. James Place, a food pantry operated by Bishop Sullivan Center in Kansas City.

One ton of food is equal to 2,000 pounds, which will provide emergency grocery assistance to 50 local families. Bishop Sullivan Center operates two food pantries that feed about 100 families a day. The Center also provides 200-250 hot evening meals each weeknight at its soup kitchen.

Straub Construction is a longtime supporter of Bishop Sullivan Center. For each home run, Straub will donate $320 to Bishop Sullivan Center, to be used specifically for purchasing one ton of food from the Harvesters Food Bank.

The general public also can get involved in Hit it a Ton. By visiting www.HitItATon.org, donors will receive Billy Butler autographed merchandise. Those who donate $32 will get an autographed picture, while a $160 donation means an autographed baseball. Those who donate $320 will get an autographed bat.
