Mill Valley wins KVL soccer title

May 7, 2008

Mill Valley won its first Kaw Valley League girls soccer championship Tuesday night when it shut out Bonner Springs, 10-0, at Mill Valley High School.

The Lady Jaguars came out on fire. They scored four times in the first eight minutes

of the game. Ashleigh Meyer began the scoring with a shot that sailed past Bonner's defense and goalkeeper. Then in a flurry, senior Kelly Donaghy scored three goals for a hat trick in a span of three minutes.

"It felt really good, my teamates were getting me the ball and I kept putting them into the back of the net," Donaghy said. "It felt really good tonight."

Amanda Franklin both knocked in goals to stretch the lead to 6-0.

Bonner Springs made an adjustment by putting its best player, Alyssa Kelly, in at defensive midfielder to help put an end to the scoring.

The move helped extend the game and Bonner held Mill Valley scoreless for 12 minutes, until a long rainbow kick slipped through Bonner goalie Tiffany Burgoon's finger tips to make the score 7-0.

That score stood until halftime.

Senior Jennifer Volmer reignited the Mill Valley offense 40 seconds into the second half, much to the delight of her teammates and fans in attendence — it was her first career goal.

"I was so excited, it was a pretty big deal," said a jubilant Volmer. "Now I can graduate and feel content."

Cassiday Love and Becky Newhouse each scored goals to round out the scoring for Mill Valley.

BSHS continues to be a MASH unit. The nicks and bruises have hurt the Bravettes’ depth all year long, and depth is a very crucial part of a soccer team's success. The Bravettes only had a total of 12 players suited up on Tuesday.

Mill Valley improved to 11-3 with the victory.

Whom do you think John McCain should choose as his running mate?

“Sometimes he has a perception of being ambivalent, and he could pick a woman who has a strong record — there are some good choices out there. He’s probably going to have to make some choices about what voters he wants; if he chooses someone like Mitt Romney, he could get more conservative voters.”
