Rationale needed
May 7, 2008
To the editor:
I read with some disbelief the article regarding the Museum Connections class at Monticello Trails Middle School. I find it perplexing that the school's administration would phase out a class that has been so well received by students and parents alike. My sons both took Museum Connections and have had nothing but positive comments about the class. I have always found Keil Hileman to be enthusiastic and dedicated to his students. As an educator, I recognize Mr. Hileman's all too rare gift of combining personal passion and meaningful instruction in his teaching.
In the article, Tobie Waldeck was quoted as saying that too many exploratory classes have been offered by Monticello Trails. This "saturation" of elective classes appears to be the primary reason for eliminating Museum Connections. Mr. Waldeck further stated that Mr. Hileman was afforded an opportunity to become a core social studies teacher or be designated as a "traveling" Museum Connections instructor. Mr. Hileman accepted the "traveling" position and will apparently teach his course throughout the district. Great plan.
I find it troublesome that administrators termed the decision to eliminate Mr. Hileman's course a "positive" for the district, citing the expansion of Museum Connections to other schools. Actually, the "expansion" would not have occurred if not for Mr. Hileman's graciousness and dedication to his profession. The "expansion" appears to be an afterthought and a way of "saving face" for district officials.
I have always supported the De Soto School District and its attempts to build a strong community base. I understood the district's struggles as rapid growth taxed existing resources. I supported campaigns for increased funding. I have understood the need to reorganize school boundaries and offer uncertain technology to district students and school patrons.
I do not understand the decision to eliminate arguably the most popular course offered at Monticello Trails. Eliminating a "model" course in the name of "balance." If anyone can explain this rationale I would love to hear it.

Talking points
Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?
Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
