Mill Valley boys, girls win KVL track titles

The Mill Valley boys and girls track teams swept the team titles on Wednesday evening at the Kaw Valley League championships at Santa Fe Trail High School in Carbondale.

The Mill Valley boys edged Bonner Springs by a 142-129 margin, and Tonganoxie finished a distant third with 95 points.

Meanwhile, the Mill Valley girls beat Tonganoxie by a 175-153 margin, and Piper was third with 83.

Matt Sittenauer paced with boys with a first-place finish in the long jump and runner-up finishes in the 100-meter dash, 200 and triple jump. Colin Orand was the league champ in the 300 hurdles, and he finished second in the 400 and third in the 110 hurdles.

The throwers made the biggest impact for Mill Valley by placing all three competitors in all three throws. Max Carroll won the javelin, Mike Butko was third and McCauley Garton finished sixth. In the discus, Mark Grinstead was the champ, Chris Mayer was fifth and Shawn Stene finished sixth. Stene was the runner-up in the shot put, Mayer was third and Tyler Gadwood finished fourth.

For the girls, Alaina Fairbanks won a pair of titles in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Bethany Gagelin was second in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 100 hurdles.

Katie Bauer won the long jump and triple jump. Jasa DuMontelle was the league champ in the high jump.

Kelsey O’Hara placed second in both the 1,600 and 3,200, and Whitney Hartman was second in the 800 and sixth in the 400.
