Shawnee Scout earns Eagle rank

Derek Boettcher, 18, of Shawnee, has earned the rank of Eagle in the Boy Scouts of America. His Court of Honor will be at 4 p.m. May 24 at Shawnee United Methodist Church, 10700 Johnson Drive.

Derek is a member of the Order of the Arrow, and a Warrior in the Great Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He has served as Patrol Leader and Chaplain's Aide. For his Eagle Scout project, Derek educated the public about water pollution by placing emblems on storm water drains and handing out informational materials in a square mile area in Shawnee.

Derek is a senior at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School and will be attending the University of Kansas to study theater and film. He is the son of Mark and Bobette Boettcher.

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
