Northwest falls to Olathe East
The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls soccer team ended its season with a 3-1 loss to Olathe East on Thursday night in the Class 6A regional finals at the College Boulevard Activities Center.
East took a 2-0 lead during the first half with a pair of goals by freshman Kaitlyn Atkins.
Northwest didn’t go away easily, however.
The Cougars battled back, trading shots with the Hawks during the first 20 minutes of the second half. Neither team found the net.
Then Northwest had its breakthrough. Senior Kelsey White launched a long free kick that deflected off of a defender and found its way to sophomore Melanie Slechta who put it past the goalkeeper. That cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 62nd minute.
The momentum swing didn’t last long. East answered with a goal from Senior Katie O’Keefe 70 seconds later for the final margin of victory.
Northwest ends its season with a 10-7-1 record.
