Letter to the editor: Book donations go unwanted
September 2, 2008
To the editor:
I read with interest your story about the library usage and how it is growing. Would someone then please tell me why libraries no longer want donations of books? A year ago I tried to donate a large collection of books to the Johnson County Library only to be told they don't take donations.
These were excellent books in mint condition because I take care of my books. History books, classical and historical novels, science, geography, philosophy, even cookbooks. Someone looking for cookbooks could have had a good dozen cookbooks practically unused.
But the library didn't want them.
These good books have since gone where they will never do anyone any good. It broke my heart, but I had to clear out.

Talking points
Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?
Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
