Letter to the editor: Monticello alternative
September 2, 2008
To the editor:
The proposed widening of Monticello to four lanes between SM Parkway and Johnson drive is a huge mistake.
It will not solve the traffic congestion that is due mainly to the beginning and ending of the school day, because Monticello is a 25 mph school zone and has crosswalks and a stoplight.
Having four lanes would also make it more dangerous for the hundreds of kids that cross Monticello daily going to and from school. A four-lane corridor would also detract from the small community feel of the neighborhood and lower property values for those living near Monticello.
The better solution would be to extend Woodsonia south to Outlook Drive and the adjacent shopping center. That would siphon off a great deal of the traffic coming from neighborhoods north and west of Monticello, thereby reducing traffic as well as providing another access point for the west end of the shopping center at Shawnee Mission Parkway and making that area more viable for future growth.
Widening Monticello amounts to an $8.5 million Band Aid since it only serves to funnel more traffic into a bottleneck without solving the long-term problem of growth.

Talking points
Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?
Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
