Northwest fends off feisty South

September 6, 2008

Behind 250 yards of rushing offense, the Shawnee Mission Northwest Cougars downed Shawnee Mission South, 27-13, in the 2008 football opener for both teams Friday night at Shawnee Mission South District Stadium.

Senior tailback Bryce Atagi racked up 110 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, while senior quarterback Mark Fancher delivered 122 yards and a touchdown on his nine carries. Senior quarterback Patrick Lancaster helped provide the other score with a 9-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Nick Kolega.

The two teams traded scores in the first half with only a missed Raider extra point proving the difference in the Cougars' 14-13 halftime lead. Northwest then shout out South in the second half, taking advantage of a key Raider turnover and bending, but not breaking, on two long South drives. Touchdowns by Atagi and Kolega in the second half were the difference.

The Cougars are now 1-0 on the young season and will face Olathe East -- the only team to beat Northwest in the regular season last year - next Friday.

Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?

Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
