Justice Center ready for unveiling
September 16, 2008
The city of Shawnee hopes residents will join in Saturday at the annual Public Safety Open House, which this year will be at the new Justice Center, 5850 Renner Road, on the northeast corner of Interstate 435 and Johnson Drive.
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Justice Center complex, which includes facilities for the Municipal Court and Police Department as well as Fire Station 72. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m.
The complex replaces the outdated police facilities at 6535 Quivira and the outdated fire station on Midland Drive, as well as moving the municipal court out of cramped quarters at City Hall. Voters approved an eighth-cent sales tax to pay for the new buildings in 2004. The project has been designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria.

Talking points
Do you think Veterans Day should be a prominent holiday?
Absolutely. We wouldn’t be able to sit here and eat lunch like this if it weren’t for the veterans. We’ve got millions of people that fought and died to save this country; it should be more than a bank holiday.
