The Mill Valley boys cross country team placed third and the Maranatha Academy boys and girls finished fifth on Saturday at the Bonner Springs Invitational at Wyandotte County Park.

The De Soto boys and girls swept the team titles.

Tyler Gude was the top performer for Mill Valley. He finished 11th in the 5K race in 17:59. Teammate Jacob Rohrer finished 13th in 18:09 - a new personal best. Rounding out Mill Valley's first five were Oliver Parsons (22nd, 18:38), Ryan Hodges (28th, 18:58), Ryan Howes (34th, 19:18).

Mitch Heller was the top Maranatha runner. He finished 18th in 18:21. His teammates didn't finish far behind. Taylor Wallace was 23rd in 18:40, Jordan Kirkpatrick was 25th in 18:44 and Seth Swank was 26th in 18:50. Other Maranatha competitors were Brant Asbell (42nd, 19:34) and Luke Miller (55th, 20:05).

James Carney was the top St. James Academy finisher. He was 29th in 19:02.

Lansing's Brandon Craig won the race in 16:38.

The Maranatha girls had a pair of runners finish in the top 10 in the 4K race. Ali Bailey was eighth in 17:05 and Bethany Zarda was 10th in 17:13. Emily Smith was 38th in 18:21, Faith Manning was 44th in 18:49 and Ashley McConnell rounded out the Eagles' first five with a 53rd-place finish in 19:11.

Kati Strickland was the top Mill Valley runner. She placed 16th in 17:20. Meredith Brooks placed 20th in 17:25. Rounding out the Jaguars' first five were Chelsea Pfannenstiel (37th, 18:20), Kelsey Strobel (52nd, 19:06) and Kyndra Zeigler (58th, 19:30).

The St. James girls were 10th as a team. Bridgette McCormick finished sixth overall in 16:57. Teammate Amy Feldkamp also had a strong race and finished 22nd in 17:36.

De Soto's Ellie Sheridan was the girls' champion in 15:20.

NORTH RUNNERS SHINE AT SOUTHERN STAMPEDE

The Shawnee Mission North cross country team competed Saturday at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. Two North boys runners were among the top performers in the meet. Teammates Nathan Sloniker and Alex Hendee placed 13th and 14th, respectively, in 16:10 and 16:11. Both had career-best times.

Do you think it is important for Shawnee to be bicycle-friendly?

I think it’s important. I do love and use the paths, but it would be nice to have lanes so we could use bikes to run errands - saving gas!
