Letter: Election becomes political
April 2, 2009
Last week, we received two calls asking us to vote for Janine Gracy and Larry Meyer for the De Soto USD 232 Board of Education because they are both “good Democrats.”
Since when did BOE elections become political party issues?
I called both candidates and only Ms. Gracy returned my call. When asked about her position on the Museum Connections Class, she said that the issue had been resolved and the course will be offered at all middle and high schools starting next year.
Our interest in Museum Connections began when we met Mr. Hileman with two grandchildren in his class, and visited the museum. We share his interest in artifacts and have loaned him some items. How can a truckload of artifacts be transported between schools?
We are parents of four, grandparents of five, and two foreign exchange students have stayed with us. We have been involved and interested in practically every school activity.
During those 50 years we have met a few teachers we consider exceptional. In our opinion (and that of most MTMS students) Mr. Hileman is at the top of the list. What a shame it would be to alter the Museum, dilute the class, and alienate Mr. Hileman.
We do not know nor care what political party they are affiliated with, but we’ll be voting April 7 for Tammy Thomas, Randy Johnson and Kevin Straub in the USD 232 BOE.

Point of View
Do you think it is important for Shawnee to be bicycle-friendly?
I think it’s important. I do love and use the paths, but it would be nice to have lanes so we could use bikes to run errands - saving gas!

If your wanting the school board to become less political, the last people you should be voting for is Randy Johnson and Kevin Straub. These two candidates are only interested in promoting their own personal agenda and using the board position as a stepping stone to other political positions. Randy Johnson's only concern on the school board is his and his friends wallet. If it were up to him, not one dime would be spent in the district. Kevin Straub has a laundry list of issues as a Shawnee City Council member, here is an example:

If voters choose to elect these two individuals to the school board, then I expect the well earned reputation of the Desoto School District to diminish over the coming years.
