Hillman, Woods chosen for Kansas Shrine Bowl
Two of the top high school football players in Shawnee have been selected to participate in the Kansas Shrine Bowl on July 25 at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium.
Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Darion Hillman and Mill Valley senior Nicholas Woods both were picked to represent the East All-Stars. Rosters were announced Saturday.
Hillman anchored the offensive and defensive lines for a Northwest squad that went 16-5 during the past two seasons and won the 2007 Sunflower League championship.
Woods led the Kaw Valley League in rushing for the second straight season as he romped for more than 1,600 yards in 2008. He also was a hard-hitting force in the defensive secondary for a Jaguar squad that went 9-2, won the Kaw Valley League championship and advanced to the Class 5A state quarterfinals for the first time.
Hillman is one of nine Sunflower League players chosen to participate in the game. Olathe North coach Pete Flood will be an assistant coach for the East All-Stars.
Joining Woods from the Kaw Valley League are Perry-Lecompton’s Shane Gimzo and Joel Gantz.
De Soto’s Mike Sprowl also will represent the East All-Stars.
More information on the Kansas Shrine Bowl and the festivities surrounding the game will be posted as it becomes available at ksshrine.com.
